I had the good fortune to be able to travel to Bhutan in 2001, before the country had begun its march to modernity. My guides were excited because Bhutan had just gotten satellite television for the first time, and you could tell that the influence of the outside world was going to show up in unique ways - at one archery competition, when an archer got a great shot his teammates would yell "Aiwa!" before breaking into their traditional dance.
These are by no way a complete depiction of Bhutan - just images that I was fortunate to capture on film as I travelled across the country. I have never met a nicer people, and I hope that the modernization of Bhutan doesn't change that.
